Church refutes NPA charge
vs. ambushed village chief
BY ALEX PAL

The people of Barangay Aya, La Libertad, turned out in full force Thursday for the funeral of their slain barangay captain Eladio "Lydio" Baylon, who, along with six others, was killed in an ambush March 9 in Sitio Manluminsag, Brgy. Mandapaton in the town.

Even La Libertad Mayor Josy Limkaichong was driven to tears as she paid her last respects. There was not a single dry eye in the highly emotional funeral. Baylon was not only Limkaichong's trusted political supporter, he was popular with the people.

It was this popularity with the masses that earned him the ire of the New People's Army. Last week, pieces of paper with what appeared to be the NPA letterhead and logo were circulated in the first district of Negros Oriental signed by a certain Ka JB Regalado, spokesperson of the NPA's Leonardo Panaligan Command-Larangan Gerilya

A Provincial Agrarian Reform Assessment and Planning Workshop for the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program beyond 2008 was held by the Department of Agrarian Reform-Oriental Negros at the Maria Luisa Suites Inn, Dumaguete City, recently.

The theme of the workshop was "Agrarian Reform for Broad-Based Rural Growth: Sustaining and Enhancing CARP Gains Beyond 2008." It implements the order of DAR Secretary Nasser Pangandaman to prepare personnel and other stakeholders for advocacy regarding CARP beyond 2008, and develop or update the Provincial Agrarian Reform Development Plan.

600 job order
casuals unpaid
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

About 600 job order employees in Tanjay City, Oriental Negros, have denounced some local officials for what they call "insensitivity and lack of concern" for their welfare.

For almost three months now, they claimed they have not received their salaries pending the approval of the 20 percent Development Plan to which their wages shall be charged.

Because of this, Mayor Baltazar Salma said he had spent from his own pocket to spare one or two meals for job order casuals and their families, and to buy them rice and other provisions. On the other hand, Vice Mayor Lawrence Teves said the payment of job order employees was not included in the 20 percent development fund.
