BFAR lifts shellfish ban

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources central office in Manila has lifted the shellfish ban in Siaton, Oriental Negros, effective March 13.

The bureau, in a letter addressed to Gov. George Arnaiz said it is now safe to gather, sell and eat shellfish coming from the municipal waters of the town.

BFAR National Capital director Malcolm Sarmiento Jr. said that based on the results of red tide monitoring activities of BFAR and the Municipal Agriculture Office of Siaton, the town is now negative for the red tide toxin.

He added that negative results for Paralytic Shellfish Poison were obtained from three consecutive weeks of sampling in the area.

The BFAR assured that it is continuously monitoring the coastal waters of the town, in coordination with the Municipal Agriculturist Office, to safeguard public health and protect the shellfish industry in the southern part of the province.*RG
