P3M abattoir in Sagay
set to operate in May

The P3 million international standard-slaughter house in Negros Occidental is expected to be operational next month or May at the Sagay City economic zone.

Governor Joseph Maraņon, who will turn 73 on March 19, yesterday said the slaughterhouse, a joint undertaking of the Sagay local government unit and the Korean Overseas International Cooperation Agency, can accommodate at least 1,200 pigs for slaughtering a day.

Maraņon who was the guest speaker of the induction of Alliance of Hog Raisers Association in Negros Occidental, in Brgy. Taloc, Bago City, also said that more than 1,000 pigs are needed everyday to supply the slaughter house.

This will encourage backyard raisers who will now have a chance to earn and command good prices, since the slaughterhouse has a marketing tie up, he added.

Maraņon also said that when he and Vice-Governor Isidro Zayco assumed office in 2001, they wanted to develop the livestock and hog raising as a second industry in Negros Occidental. This is because we have potentials to supply feeds, he added.

The hogs and livestock raising industry are part of the food and productivity agenda of the Maraņon administration. Maranon said he, Zayco and the board members running on his slate will file their certificates of candidacies on March 28 at the Comelec provincial office in Bacolod City.

Team Unity senatorial candidates Juan Miguel Zubiri and Luis "Chavit" Singson are also expected to attend the birthday celebration of Maranon in Sagay City on March 19.*GPB
