Two kidney
operations conducted

Two more successful kidney transplant operations were performed at the Bacolod Our Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital recently, Dr. Evangeline Johnson, its administrator and CEO, said yesterday.

The first kidney transplant at the hospital was performed on a 26-year-old woman 12 months earlier, she said.

The two new transplants were performed on a 27-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman by Dr. Jesus Alberto Maestral, a kidney transplant surgeon, and Dr. Jerome Pepingco, a kidney transplant specialist on Feb. 7 and March 10, she said. Both patients were suffering from End Stage Kidney Disease.

"Patients suffering from ESRD undergo dialysis as the only way to maintain life. Kidney transplantation, the only mode of treatment for ESRD, offers the greatest potential for restoring normal kidney function and healthy, productive life," she said.

Maestral and Pepingco, who trained at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute in Manila, said that the beneficiary of the first kidney transplant done Jan. 4, 2006 has good kidney function.

The other members of the team were urologists Ricardo Paulo Yusay, Henry Geroche and Romeo Reyes; anesthesiologists Ma. Theresa Arellano and Ephraim Aquino, and transplant head nurse Vivien Oliveros.

The hospital offers Philippines Charity Sweepstake Office and a PhilHealth supported rates for kidney transplants, Johnson said.*
