Peņalosa unfazed
by bigger opponent

Negrense boxer Gerry Peņalosa, a former world champion, didn't mind moving a weight class higher just to get another world title shot.

So it came as no surprise when he also declared that he can "out-smart and defeat" World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon when they clash in a March 17 (Sunday in the Philippines) title fight in Las Vegas. De Leon will defend his title against Peņalosa in a 12-round duel underneath the Marco Antonio Barrera-Juan Manuel Marquez card, dubbed "Fearless".

In the press conference organized by Golden Boy Promotions in Los Angeles recently, Peņalosa said he is motivated to carry the title back to the Philippines.

Team Laperla
tops Ford event

The Laperla Team composed of Jimmy Yusay, Joemarie Limjap, Hector Torre and Leonard Matti topped the one-day club level competition of the Ford National Team Shootout 2007 at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City Sunday.

The quartet assembled a 59 to lead four other squads to the Satellite Finals of the tournament that adapted a modified scramble format.

Coming in second was the team of Tim Zulueta, Ramon Vicete, Bert Canlas and Gaby Monfort, who combined for a 60. The squad composed of Ed Coscolluela, Kokoy Locsin, Joe Villanueva and Francis Jalandoni carded a 61 and settled for third place.
