Women's Day marked in Silay

More than 500 women leaders from 16 barangays in Silay City, Negros Occidentl, are holding an afternoon caravan and program today, for the Women's Day celebration.

The caravan will take off at 1 p.m. in front of the City Hall and will end at the Natalio G. Velez Sports and Cultural Center (Kansilyan Gym) where a 2 p.m. program called as "Ulat sa Bayan, Ulat ng Kababaihan, Sayawan at Kantahan" is set, a press release from Councilor Marie June Pavillar-Castro, chairman of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on women and family said. This year's theme is 'CEDAW ng BAYAN: Kabuhayan ng Kababaihan."

Mayor Carlo Gamban will give a message before the presentation of the report, while Castro will report on the GAD program's projects and activities while selected community-based leaders will share their projects fund-raising initiatives, the press release said.

Vice Mayor Francis Joseph Jalandoni will give a message, followed by various songs and dances, and raffle of door prizes to about 260 winners.

CEDAW means Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women and the focus is on women's economic empowerment or livelihood opportunities, the press release added.*

Tourism officers visit PNOC

Members of the Association of Tourism Officers of Negros Occidental headed by Evelinda Mondia, visited the new plant of the Philippine National Oil Company-Energy Development Corp. in Brgy. Mailum, Bago City, recently, a Capitol press release said.

PNOC-EDC public relations officer, Joey Higgins, welcomed the group and presented the company's background during a short orientation program at the base camp. He said tourism officers play a very important role by giving the right information to the guests and tourists coming to the province.

The visit was a side trip from Buenos Aires Mountain Resort in Bago, the venue of the tourism officers' meeting hosted by Bago City government, the press release said.

The activity was part of the tourism awareness program of the provincial government for tourism stakeholders and organizers thanked the Bago City government under Mayor Janet Torres for hosting the meeting and PNOC-EDC personnel and staff, the press release added.*
