'Raw sugar production
for 2006-2007 on track'

Sugar Regulatory Administration chief James Ledesma said the sugar industry is on track in achieving its 2.2 million metric tons of raw sugar production for crop year 2006-2007, based on latest SRA figures.

Data as of Feb. 25, 2007 show total raw sugar production has reached 1,578,336 MTs, which is 166,101 or 11.76 percent, higher than last year's production for the same period of 1,412,235 MTs.

By region, Negros still produces the highest volume - so far, 953,317 MTs for the current crop year, up by 88,089 MTs or 10.18 percent compared to the previous year's 865,228 MTs.

8 LGUs maintain animal
breeding centers

Eight local government units in Negros Occidental are maintaining swine and goat breeding centers to serve as sources of stocks for livestock dispersal projects in their localities. The breeding centers are situated in the cities of Cadiz, Sagay, Kabankalan, La Carlota, and Escalante, and towns of Pontevedra, Calatrava and Toboso.

The provincial government, through the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian, provides LGUs planning to establish breeding centers with hybrid stocks that it buys from nucleus farms in Bago City, Isabela and Valladolid. The breeder nucleus farm in Valladolid was registered and opened last year with a sow level of 200 heads from Australia.
