Former Rep. Genaro Alvarez, 63, yesterday filed his certificate
of candidacy to run for congressman of the sixth district of Negros
Occidental before provincial COMELEC chief Jessie Suarez.
Alvarez, a former Negros Occidental board member and three
term congressman, is returning to politics after a three-year break
and is running in place of his son, incumbent Rep. Genaro Rafael
Alvarez. He said his son will return to farming.
Alvarez, who is running under the Nationalist People's
Coalition, was accompanied in filing his CoC by his daughter Mercedes,
and Gov. Joseph Maraņon.
The Liberal Party is fielding Manuel Zayco Dabao to also run
for congressman of the sixth district but he has yet to file his
CoC. "It is good for whoever wants to run to do so at least
once and for all so they will know, if they can win or not," Alvarez
said.
Alvarez said that, if reelected, among his priorities will
be the completion of the 23-kilometer Hinobaan road, and the creation
of more national high schools in his district so they can get larger
funds.
Alvarez said he is supporting the bid of Mary Jane Cubid for
mayor of Hinobaan.
Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Maraņon said if Cubid is the
NPC bet, he will have to abide by the party's choice.
Other NPC mayoralty candidates in the sixth district under
the United Negros Alliance are Soledad Montilla - Sipalay, John
Rey Tabujara - Cauayan, Jechonias Manzano - Candoni, Joyce Alvarez
- Ilog, and Pedro Zayco - Kabankalan City.
Expected to run for reelection for provincial board seats
are Macario Zafra and Adolfo Mangao.
Meanwhile, Rolando Novero may run for mayor of Kabankalan City
against Zayco.*CPG
