Palaro medalists to
get incentives today
BY PATRICK PANGILINAN

Negrense Athletes who won medals in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet last month will receive incentives from the Negros Occidental Provincial government at the Provincial Capitol at 2 p.m. today.

Close to P.5 million will be given to the medalists, coaches, trainers and chaperons of Negros teams who posted at least a third place finish in the regional games.

More than half of P465,800 or P260,000 will go to the medalists, coaches and trainers in the secondary division, where the Negros contingent hauled in 191 gold, 82 silver and 37 bronze medals.

Province, Valiant off
to winning start

The Province of Negros Occidental and Valiant Bank got their semifinal campaigns off to a winning start, although they had to go through anxious moments before securing crucial victories in the Tan Kek Pin Cup Memorial Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym.

Rex Bayer held Province together when they mounted a late rally that snatched a 67-64 come-from-behind win over Davies Paint-Probac, before Valiant Bank repeated over defending champion BBC, 102-93, in overtime.

Province and Valiant could arrange a championship duel if they beat BBC and Davies Paint but a loss could pave the way for virtual knockout matches on the next playdate. Both matches were set late yesterday.

collegiate prospect

Justin Chua, a 6-foot-5 cager born and raised in Bacolod, is making his presence felt in the basketball scene Manila's high school.

Following his impressive performances in leagues participated in by Chinese schools, Chua has emerged as one of the hottest prospects and three of the country's top college squads --- Ateneo, De La Salle and Sto. Tomas --- are lining up to secure his services.

The 17-year-old Chua, a junior student, powered Chiang Kai Shek College to the Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association crown for the first time in 12 years recently. He also bagged Most Valuable Player honors.
