Palaro medalists to
get incentives today
BY PATRICK PANGILINAN

Negrense Athletes who won medals in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet last month will receive incentives from the Negros Occidental Provincial government at the Provincial Capitol at 2 p.m. today.

Close to P.5 million will be given to the medalists, coaches, trainers and chaperons of Negros teams who posted at least a third place finish in the regional games.

More than half of P465,800 or P260,000 will go to the medalists, coaches and trainers in the secondary division, where the Negros contingent hauled in 191 gold, 82 silver and 37 bronze medals.

The remaining P205,800 will go to the medalists in the elementary category, where Negros collected 118 golds, 108 silvers and 25 bronzes. Under the incentive package, a gold medal is worth P800, while the silver and bronze medalists will receive P600 and P400, respectively.

Negros took 12 team championships in the elementary division, while 18 crowns fell on the Negrenses' coffers in the high school contest. In the final Palaro tally, Negros overwhelmed Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Aklan and Guimaras with the host team claiming the overall crown in the elementary category, after posting 363 championship points. Negros won the secondary title convincingly with 465 points, 110 more than second placer Iloilo. St. La Salle tankers Kiefer Piccio and Miguel Villanueva won seven golds each and they are expected to receive a considerable chunk of the incentives allotted for swimming.

Also expecting a windfall are Carmela Nava and Dominique Balinas. Both swimmers fished out five golds each.

In athletics, Keizel Pedriņa, who hails from Victorias City, will be the top earner, after picking up five golds. Jossie Entrina of Bago, who completed a hat-trick of victories in the throwing events, is expected to collect P2,400.

Escalante standout Aladin Flores won three golds in the elementary division, while Maika De Oro and Darnelle Camposilao snared two golds each in throwing events. *PP
