New arrastre company to
handle port operations
BY ALEX PAL

The Philippine Ports Authority has awarded the Manila-based Prudential Customs Brokerage Services, Inc. a 10-year Cargo Handling Contract for the Port of Dumaguete City.

The award was announced by PPA general manager Oscar Sevilla in a letter dated January 29, following a public bidding in Manila last December 4, 2006.

Sevilla wrote PCBSI president Rodolfo Ibuna to inform him of the bidding results.

PCBSI Arrastre and Stevedoring manager Raymond Gonzales said the PCBSI offers services related to port operations such as arrastre, stevedoring and lighterage services, shipping agency, customs brokerage.

They also offer integrated services such as customs consulting and clearing, logistics services and transport as well as domestic freight forwarding. The PCBSI is an ISO 9001:2000 Certified company which has won various awards from the Philippine Ports Authority for outstanding services in its field of expertise.

Gonzales said the PCBSI has been providing lighterage and stevedoring services since 1972 and is now handling arrastre operations in the ports of San Jose in Mindoro, Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Brookes Point in Palawan, Rio Tuba in Palawan, Coron in Palawan and at Dapitan in Zamboanga del Norte. That in the field of stevedoring, the PCBSI prides itself for its safety record provided by its seasoned tugboat crew, bargemen and stevedores.

"We are equipped with the necessary gears and supplies to ensure fast and efficient completion of loading activities," he said.

Gonzales said that their company won the bid over three other giant arrastre companies in the country.

He said that since news of their impending takeover of the Dumaguete port operations came out, they have been welcomed by several port users, who have been waiting for better services at the Dumaguete port.

The PPA and PCBSI are currently working out the necessary paperwork that would expedite the turnover of port cargo handling operations from the PPA to the PCBSI.*AP
