Close to P.5 million has been earmarked by the Provincial Government
of Negros Occidental as incentives for Negrense athletes who won
medals in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet
in Bacolod City last week.
Coaches, trainers and chaperons of Negros teams who posted
at least a third place finish are also expected to receive bonuses
that will be handed out by Gov. Joseph Maraņon in a ceremony at
the Provincial Capitol at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
More than half of P465,800 or P260,000 will go to the medalists,
coaches and trainers in the secondary division, where the Negros
contingent hauled 191 gold, 82 silver and 37 bronze medals.
The remaining P205,800 will go to the medalists in the elementary
category, where Negros collected 118 golds, 108 silvers and 25 bronzes.
Under the incentive package, a gold medal is worth P800, while
the silver and bronze medalists will receive P600 and P400, respectively.
Negros took 12 team championships in the elementary division,
while 18 crowns fell on the Negrenses' coffers in the high school
contest. In the final Palaro tally, Negros overwhelmed Iloilo,
Capiz, Antique, Aklan and Guimaras with the host team claiming the
overall crown in the elementary category, after posting 363 championship
points. Negros won the secondary title convincingly with 465
points, 110 more than second placer Iloilo.
St. La Salle tankers Kiefer Piccio and Miguel Villanueva won
seven golds each and they are expected to receive a considerable
chunk of the incentives allotted for swimming. Also expecting a
windfall are Carmela Nava and Dominique Balinas. Both swimmers fished
out five golds each.
In athletics, Keizel Pedriņa, who hails from Victorias City,
will be the top earner, after picking up five golds. Jossie Entrina
of Bago, who completed a hat-trick of victories in the throwing
events, is expected to collect P2,400.
Escalante standout Aladin Flores won three golds in the elementary
division, while Maika De Oro and Darnelle Camposilao snared two
golds each in throwing events.
Negros' team title came in the elementary contest came in girls'
athletics, girls' badminton, baseball, boys' chess, football, boys
and girls' gymnastics, softball, boys' swimming, girls' table tennis
and boys and girls' taekwondo.
Secondary division hostilities saw Negrenses bagging the titles
in boys' athletics, boys' badminton, baseball, basketball, boxing,
boys and girls' gymnastics, boys and girls' lawn tennis, sepak takraw,
softball, boys and girls' swimming, girls' table tennis, boys' taekwondo
and boys and girls' volleyball. *CPT
