SU student shot twice, survives
BY MARICAR ARANAS AND RENE GENOVE

A student of Silliman University was shot twice and hit in the left arm and left side of his breast, at about 3 a.m. Sunday, along EJ Blanco Drive, Barangay Piapi, Dumaguete City.

The police identified the victim as Nathaniel Vergara, 18, single, a BS Management Student of Silliman, who, fortunately, survived the shooting and is now recuperating at the Silliman University Medical Center Foundation Inc. in Dumaguete.

Initial police investigation disclosed that Vergara had figured in a petty fight with a group of young people at the El Camino Bar in Piapi, an hour before the shooting.

Insp. Errol Garchitorena said Vergara told investigators that while he and his companions were traveling along EJ Blanco road from El Camino bar, the suspects, allegedly riding a pick-up truck, overtook the victim's motorcycle, then suddenly blocked the road and started firing at them.

The victims failed to identify the suspects.

Police theorized that the motive of the crime could be jealousy or a gang fight. Probers said they will file charges against the suspects as soon as they get the affidavits of the witnesses.*MA/RG
