Heroes' welcome
await local batters

The Bacolod City Government is spearheading the heroes' welcome for the newly-crowned Asia Pacific Junior League champion Bacolod-Negros softball team when the players arrive at 7 a.m. in the city today.

A motorcade starting at 8 a.m. at the Bacolod airport will take the World Series-bound softbelles around the city's major streets, before winding up at the City Hall, where a press conference is scheduled at 10 a.m. with Mayor Evelio Leonardia. The Bacolod squad, composed mainly of players from Education Training and Center School and Domingo Lacson National High School, swept Guam in their best-of-three series in the As-Pac tournament at the Rosario Complex in Pasig City.

The victory assured the Bacoleņas of a fourth straight World Series appearance in a run that dates back to August 2004 when ETCS clinched second runner-up honors in the Little League division in Portland, Oregon.

Aces nip Beermen

With Rossel Ellis and Sonny Thoss delivering clutch baskets, the Alaska Aces pulled off a 100-99 squeaker over the San Miguel Beermen Wednesday night in Game One of their 2007 Talk n Text PBA Fiesta Conference best-of-seven showdown at the Araneta Coliseum.

The Aces were aided by the late-game blunder of San Miguel import Galen Young, who passed up the opportunity to take the shot when the game was on the line.

Danny Ildefonso, the recipient of Young's pass, misfired a 15-footer from the right flank in the closing seconds, allowing the Aces to escape with the win.

Arum set to announce
Pacquiao-Sotto battle

Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank Inc. is pitting Manny Pacquiao against his brother's conqueror, Mexican Humberto Soto on Oct. 6 and that the "leading candidate" for the site is Vancouver, Canada.

Arum made the confirmation with boxingconfidential.com's Michael Marley, ending weeks of speculation on Pacquiao's next opponent.

"We will make an announcement on Manny next Monday or Tuesday regardless of the result of the other situation," Arum said, referring to the ongoing mediation talks between Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions, which also claims the right to Pacquiao's fights.
