Tidal surge at Boulevard
likely to occur: Malayang
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

A tidal surge is likely to happen in Dumaguete City, particularly at the Rizal Boulevard, because of the impact or effects of sea level rise.

This will be a result of a combination of the high inter-tidal current and high surface wind, Silliman president Dr. Ben Malayang III said at a forum with a cross section of the community, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, PAG-ASA, and students. Studies of an inter-governmental panel showed the melting of the ice, but the effect of heat being trapped in the oceans do not cause that sea level rise, he said.

He said it is the expansion of water molecules in the ocean due to heat that's likely to explain more of sea level rise we are experiencing. Malayang said his fear is explained by the fact that the Pacific Ocean, of which the Dumaguete coastline is directly linked through the Bohol Sea, has a level that is three to five feet higher than the rest of the Pacific.

2 more apprehended for drugs
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Two more drug personalities were placed behind bars for selling prohibited drugs in Oriental Negros.

Dandy Rebante, 27, single, of Guihulngan town, was nabbed with one sachet of suspected shabu and P500 in marked money in his possession during a buy-bust operation in Barangay Looc, Dumaguete City Wednesday morning.

National Bureau of Investigation agent Miguel Dungog said operatives of Task Force 24 conducted a buy-bust operation, but persons in the neighborhood tried to snatch the suspect from agents who arrested him, resulting in a minor scuffle. Agents had to fire warning shots so the individuals protecting the suspect would disperse. Rebante had served five years in jail for selling shabu in 1999 to 2004, under the old drugs law, Republic Act No. 6425. He admitted ownership of the confiscated items.

CIDG nabs store owner
for multiple estafa raps

Estafa charges will be filed by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group against a store owner for non-payment of accounts and for issuing several bouncing checks to her suppliers in Sibulan, Oriental Negros.

More than 15 individuals lodged a complaint before the Sibulan police to file a complaint against Rachelle Cheng Valencia Bartoces, of Batinguel, Dumaguete City, who was arrested by the CIDG by virtue of warrants of arrest, for estafa. Bartoces owns the Star Plaza Store, that is renting two stalls at the Khan Arcade Commercial in Tubtubon, Sibulan.

It opened only on June 9, but closed shop yesterday, allegedly for non-payment of accounts. One of the complainants, Nancy Dingal, proprietor of the Khan Arcade, sued her for issuing P35,530 in check as initial payment for the stalls.
