| Two
of the 30 national finalists in the Search for Outstanding Students in the Philippines
are from Oriental Negros. They are Richard Caluyo who graduated from St.
Paul University with a Bachelor of Business Management Accounting degree, and
Carme Abigail Luardo, a nursing graduate of Silliman University. The TOSP
is a search sponsored by RFM Foundation which aims at recognizing outstanding
students with exemplary performance in school and contribution to community development.
In Region 7, six made it to the national finals, including four from Cebu. The
top ten will receive their awards from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo at Malacaņang
Palace on July 5. Caluyo said his being a national finalist is a blessing.
Luardo said she is very happy to be one of the national finalists although
it entailed a lot of requirements and interviews. Batchiba Lacdo-o, head of the
Student Affairs Office of St Paul University, said she is proud of Caluyo and
the rest of the finalists from the region. Lea Marie Sicat, also a Paulinian,
was awarded as one of the Ten Outstanding Students of the Philippines in 2004.*MA
