Wage hike moratorium sought

The Negros Oriental Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce do not favor the proposal for a wage increase.

The proposed was raised by businessmen and stakeholders in the province during the consultation of the proposed wage increase.

Earlier, the Trade Union Congress in the Philippines had proposed a P75 across the board increase in Region 7.

The FCCC said they agreed to have a two-year moratorium while NOCCI said the request is still being held in abeyance. Both organizations said they are not yet ready to give the wage hike.

Some sugar planters said they cannot give the increase because they have very low production this year.

Department of Labor and Employment Regional Director Elias Cayanong said they will consolidate the position papers of the stakeholders and the businessmen's organizations.

This will be the basis for the decision of the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board, he said.

Cayanong added that they need to listen to the opinion of the stakeholders since they are the ones directly affected by the increase.

At present, the P215 minimum wage for private employees is being implemented in the province.

After the position papers are consolidated, a final consultation will be held in Cebu on July 6 on whether or not the RTWPB will grant the increase.*MA
