A pediatric oncologist said yesterday that the latest estimates show an average of 2,500 new cases of children with cancer every year in the Philippines.

Dr. Marvie Abesamis, director of The Outstanding Women in the Nation's Service Foundation, said the figure only includes the children seen in hospitals and are diagnosed, it does not include those who do not reach the hospitals and just die.

Children who develop cancer usually are those who have a family history of the disease, she said. moremoremore

One was meted life imprisonment, five were acquitted, and another was sentenced to a minimum of six months to two years by the courts in Bacolod City for drug-related cases yesterday.

Judger Edgar Garvilles of Regional Trial Court Branch 47 sentenced yesterday a Bacolod City resident to life imprisonment for possession and sale of dangerous drugs.

Found guilty by the court for violation of Sec. 5 and 11 of Art. II of Republic Act 9165 or sale and possession of dangerous drugs was Alejandrino Baquilar. moremoremore

A bombed cell site of Globe Telecom in Tubungan town in Iloilo near midnight on Sunday.

ILOILO CITY - Suspected communist rebels bombed a cell site of Globe Telecom in Tubungan town in Iloilo near midnight on Sunday, causing major damage to the facility.

At least 10 heavily armed men who introduced themselves as New People's Army rebels disarmed the cell site's two security guards of their .38 caliber pistols around 11:30 p.m. in Barangay Ambarihon, Tubungan that is around 41 km south of Iloilo City.

Lt. Col. Nestor Porlucas, commander of the Army's 79th Infantry Battalion, said in a telephone interview that the rebels tied the guards' hands and ordered them to leave the facility. Barangay Captain Alejandro de la Villa Sr. said in a radio interview that the rebels gave a flashlight to the security guards before they were sent off.moremoremore
