| A
rice and corn production survey will be conducted by the Bureau of Agricultural
Statistics in Negros Occidental from July 1 to 10. The survey will validate
data gathered during the second quarter and give a forecast for the fourth quarter
rice and corn production based on the farmers' intention to plant. Provincial
Agricultural Statistician Joely Cabarles urged farmers to provide accurate information
since it has been reported that some farmers hesitated to give such during previous
surveys for fear that the information will be used against them, especially for
tax purposes. But Cabarles assured the farmers that the data gathered will be
considered confidential and the survey result will be used by policy makers in
decision-making. The BAS will hold a one-day orientation for data collectors
on June 25. Previous data showed positive growth in harvest of rice and
corn due to interventions made by government agricultural offices, although Negros
Occidental is still far from becoming self-sufficient, Cabarles added.*NLG back
