DOLE admits dilemma
in monitoring child labor

The child labor problem in the country is compounded by the difficulty in prosecuting the parents for violating provisions of the Anti-Child Labor Law, DOLE regional director Elias Cayanong said.

He also said the Department of Labor can not intervene in cases when there is no employer-employee relationship, such as the case of "informal" workers or those in the "pakyaw" basis.

Cayanong admitted that agency is facing a dilemma in monitoring child labor in the agriculture sector, because the employers are not in the field all the time to check the employment of children, especially when they are hired on a "pakyaw" basis.

IN SIATON
DENR to develop
Lake Balanan

Environment and Natural Resources Assistant Secretary Leonilo Lariosa recently acknowledged the efforts of Governor-elect Emilio Macias II in the development of the Balanan Lake in Barangay Sandulot, Siaton, Oriental Negros.

Lariosa toured all attractions and facilities developed at the Lake, Monday, and said he was overwhelmed by its beauty and preservation. He also said his office will continue to provide technical support to develop it.

Charlie Fabre, Community Environment and Natural Resources officer in Dumaguete City, said the construction of the facilities slightly disturbed the lake. He assured though they have taken measures to prevent a major destruction. Local and foreign tourists regularly frequent the lake, particularly during weekends.

P2.3 million earmarked
to rechannel Okoy River

The local government unit of Sibulan in Oriental Negros said it will finish the re-channeling project of Okoy River especially in its critical areas during the rainy season.

Mayor Antonio Renacia said the local government has allocated P600,000, and the province P1.7 million for the re-channeling of the river, particularly in Barangay Magatas.

In October last year, close to one hectare of agricultural land, houses and livestock were damaged by floods. Residents claimed that the quarry operation in Okoy River has affected the natural flow of the river.
