Bacolod batters
rout Guam, 8-1

The softbelles from Bacolod Central Little League moved a victory away from the Junior League World Series, after demolishing Guam, 8-1, yesterday in Game 1 of their Best-of-Three series for the Asia-Pacific title at the Rosario Sports Complex in Pasig.

Angelique Benjamin had the hot bat, driving three hits, including a double that sent home Christine Sebuan and Clariz Palma as part of the four-run burst in the third inning, based on the Bacolod squad's scorebook.

Michelle Lentija pitched the first four innings, before Benjamin's cousin, Analie, took over to put the finishing touches in the victory that put the Education Training and Center School-Domingo Lacson National High School squad on the threshold of their fourth straight World Series appearance.

Sports council
eyeing more members

The Bacolod City Sports Council is expanding its membership this year by inviting the local sports organizations for football, volleyball, badminton and shooting to apply for accreditation in the council, Goldwyn Nifras, the BCSC legal counsel, said yesterday.

Nifras said the move is part of Mayor Evelio Leonardia's thrust to widen the representation of sports in the council, which only has 12 members so far, majority of them martial arts groups.

The sports association being eyed by the BCSC for swimming is the Negros Swimming Association, headed by Oscar Villanueva. Nifras said the BCSC may also invite the Negros Occidental Football Association and the Negros Occidental Volleyball Association to join the council.

Negros marathon
may be shortened

Despite funding constraints, shelving the Negros Marathon Relay this year is not an option for the Negros Occidental Track and Field Association, NOTAFA president Roger Banzuela said yesterday.

Banzuela said that he is exploring the possibility of staging a solitary leg from Kabankalan to Bacolod to accommodate the clamor of the teams, if NOTAFA fails to raise the funding requirement of P.5 million.

"The teams really want the marathon to push through. They have been training hard over the summer," Banzuela said. "If we cancel the marathon this year, it will be difficult to revive it next year".
