| The Women and Children's Concerns Desk of the Oriental Negros police
is now looking into possibility of enrolling rescued abused victims to school
while they are staying at the youth center. S/Insp. Rosalinda Abellon,
Chief of the provincial WCCD said rescued victims have expressed their interests
in going back to school this year. She added that this can be a way for
the victims to recover from trauma. Abellon, however, said victims might be more
traumatized if their schoolmates would know they are from refuge home, especially
those victims of sexual abuse. Abellon said they have a number of rescued
abused children who are now house d in one of the youth centers in Dumaguete City.
Recently, they rescued two abused children who tested positive for a sexually
transmitted disease, but who have already recovered. Meanwhile, based
on the statistics of the WCCD provincial office for the first and second quarter
of this year, cases of children's abuse reached a total of 72, compared to 103
recorded in the same period last year. Records further show that rape
incidents remain the highest among cases of abuse against children in the province.
Physical injuries and violation of Republic Act 9208, otherwise known as trafficking
in persons, ranked second and third, respectively.*MA back
