Technical-vocational education will be implemented starting this schoolyear, for selected 140 technical-vocational and trade schools in the country, the Department of Education said in a report.

DepEd said it concluded Friday a three-week related training for 1,539 technical-vocational teachers held at various regional training centers.

The training aims to upgrade the technical and vocational skills of TVE teachers and equip them with the needed tools to handle the job.

Neg.Occ. farmers urged
to utilize certified seeds

With the onset of the rainy season, farmers are encouraged to use certified seeds in their farmlots to ensure a good harvest, Provincial Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan said yesterday.

He said certified seeds are available not only at the PhilRice station in Brgy. Cansilayan, Murcia, but also from seed growers all over the province. Tabianan said it is important for the farmers to use the right variety of seeds, adaptable to the kind of land they cultivate to guarantee high yield and productive cropping season.

Tabianan said that planting already started in areas where there is sufficient water supply while OPA intervention has to be made in upland areas where irrigation facilities are lacking.

Creation of new
fisheries agency sought

Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Villafuerte is pushing for the creation of a new full-fledged fisheries department to enable the country to save P23 billion in losses yearly.

Villafuerte, chairman of the House committee on fisheries and aquaculture, said in a statement that the operations of the pint-size Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources has resulted to inadequate management of the country's fisheries resources. He cited an environment monitoring-assessment report showing that the Philippines' lack of proper management of fisheries has been costing the country P23 billion in economic losses every year.

If the government invest P1 billion yearly to maintain a new fisheries department, he said, the result would be a savings of 50 percent of the P23 billion and it can easily get a return on investment of 11 to 12 times, the press release said
