Guba caps summer
stint with twin crowns

Her summer was hectic, demanding and tiring.

The month that just passed, however, was also rewarding for young Martina Guba, who boosted her reputation as one of the hottest teenage tennis talents in the country. The 14-year-old girl from La Carlota City capped a spectacular campaign outside her home province with another double crown yesterday in the Manila leg of the Head Penn Masters Tournament in Paranaque.

Since her return from stints in the World Junior Tennis Championships in India in April and the Junior Federation Cup in Malaysia early this month, Guba produced a remarkable run of six titles in three tournaments, including yesterday's victories at the Olivares Sports Center.

Panasonic, Sharp
keglers gain 1-2 positions

Panasonic and Sharp took the 1-2 position in the men's division in the ongoing Sharp Phils. Open Trio Friendship Club Bowling Tournament at the New Top's Millennium Plaza in Bacolod City.

ON-BACIBA and Lady Dragon kept the upper hand in the women's category.

The last day of elimination phase is scheduled tonight with Rey Gargar's Panasonic leading the 16-team cast with 8,085 pinfalls.

Sharp of Irnie Diaz, improved its slate from third to second spot with 8,036, as ESD Triple-C slipped to third with 7,981, after a dismal 943 output Wednesday night.

LNA7 cagefest
semifinals today

Top-ranked BBC tries to get back at Probac-WBT when the sudden death semifinals of the LNA7 Sports Foundation Inc. Inter-Barkada Basketball Tournament are held today at the West Negros College Gym in Bacolod City.

After getting ousted by Probac in the Tan Kek Pin Cup semifinals early this year, the BBC cagers hope to erase the stigma of that loss in their 5:30 p.m. showdown.

Second seed NOBC battles third-ranked Province of Negros Occidental in the other semis match up at 7:30 p.m. The winners of today's games will meet in a best-of-three championship duel starting at 5 p.m. tomorrow. Game 2 is scheduled at 5 p.m. on Sunday, while Game 3, if necessary, is set at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. *CPT
