Ayungon mayor-elect to
address malnutrition
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Ayungon Mayor-elect Erwin Agustino said malnutrition will be the top of the list project to be addressed by the administration.

Outgoing Mayor Edsel Enardecido said that in the past five years, the number of malnourished children in the municipality has become alarming. He said that, based on a study, at least 25 percent of the total children population are malnourished. But with the implementation of the Early Childhood Development program of the UNICEF the malnutrition rate has slowly gone down.

The malnutrition rate has now reduced to 10-8 percent among children aging from zero to three years old.

Agustino said he will design a program that will address both the malnutrition problem and educate parents.

Ayungon has encouraged parents to avail of the technology in backyard farming system and utilized home grown vegetables that are good source of nutrition.

The Ayungon government is also planning to adopt the fresh milk feeding program as an alternative solution to malnutrition rate but has to look from sources of fresh milk supply in the province yet.

Some LGU's in Oriental Negros have been implementing the fresh milk feeding program to reduce the malnutrition rate of children.*MA
