DOTC gets airport sale offers

ILOILO CITY -- After two failed attempts to bid for the site of the old Iloilo airport, two prospective buyers have submitted proposals to acquire the 54-hectare prime lot, the head of the bids and awards committee of the Department of Finance said yesterday.

Finance Undersecretary John Phillip Sevilla said two parties had beaten the deadline yesterday to submit negotiated proposals for the old airport site in Mandurriao District. Sevilla refused to disclose the identities of the interested buyers but said one of them had also submitted its bid in the two previous bidding of the property. He also refused to disclose the proposed price submitted by the two parties.

"The Privatization Council will decide in two or three days on the proposals," Sevilla said in a telephone interview.

Hog cholera cases
under control - DA

The hog cholera and other swine diseases that affected several farms in Bulacan and Pampanga last week are now under control, the Department of Agriculture announced yesterday.

Davinio Catbagan, officer-in-charge of the Bureau of Animal Industry, said immediate intervention from the DA prevented the spread of hog cholera, swine flu and pseudo rabies.

No outbreaks are expected to occur in the coming days after the BAI released 5,000 doses of the hog cholera vaccine in Bulacan and directed provincial veterinarian Felipe Bartolome to immediately give the shots to healthy swine to prevent the spread of the disease, the DA said in a press release. BAI data show that 43 barangays in 11 towns and one city in Bulacan have been hit by the hog cholera outbreak. At least 183 hog growers have been affected while 2,823 hogs have been afflicted with the "cholera" and "swine influenza virus."
