| Three Negrenses missed out on medals Wednesday in the Asian Athletics
Association Championships in Amman, Jordan, leaving La Carlota City native Sheena
Atilano as the strongest hope for a medal in the four-day event. Atilano,
27, was scheduled to see action in the women's 100-m hurdles race late yesterday.
With her personal-best of 13.65 seconds, Atilano has been installed as the second
seed, behind Indonesia's Dedeh Erawati heading into the race. Cauyan-born
Arniel Ferrera, the Southeast Asian Games hammer throw king, placed eighth among
10 participants in the event with his 55.47-meter effort, which was once again
way off his personal-best and SEA Games mark of 60.47-m. Binalbagan's
Loralie Amahit, 26, wound up at seventh place with her 46.6-m mark as 23-year-old
Xiaoyan Liao of China ruled the event with a 60.58-m effort. Arnold Villarube,
who hails from Escalante City, failed to make the finals of the men's 100-m race,
after posting a clocking of 10.88 seconds in the first heat. Francis Samual
of Qatar earned the "Asia's fastest athlete" tag by clocking 9.99 seconds in the
final, obliterating Koji Ito's Asian Record of 10.00s record set in 1998.
The difference between Ferrera and the top three winners was at least 15 meters.
Ali Zinkawi of Kuwait took the gold with a 75.71-m record, edging Tajikistan's
Dilshod Nazarov, who heaved 75.70-m. Japanese athlete Hiroaki Doi settled for
the silver with a 70.74-m effort. Amahit was about 14 meters short of
the effort turned in by gold winner Xiaoyan Liao of China, who threw for 60.58-m.
Na-ru Kang of Korea settled for the silver with her 57.38-m output. *CPT back
