The City of Kabankalan in Negros Occidental yesterday kicked off its week-long
10th Charter Day and Farmers' Week celebrations with a parade and program spearheaded
by the Department of Education, a press release from the city said.
Mayor Pedro Zayco, guest of honor Vice Gov. Isidro Zayco, Board Member Adolfo
Mangao Sr., schools division superintendent Rizalino Tortosa, and city councilors,
cut the ceremonial ribbon at the program held at the plaza. The mayor said the
local government will release P1.5 million to renovate the Gabaldon building at
the Erams West Elementary School, which is now a landmark of Kabankalan. He added
that the city will offer a master's degree scholarship for public school teachers,
and provide DepEd with a vehicle worth P850,000, the press release said.
Meanwhile, 33 booths were constructed at the city park where the products of barangays
are displayed, the press release added.* back

sentenced for forestry law violation
Six persons were sentenced by Judge Felipe Banzon of the Regional Trial Court
Branch 69 in Silay City, to suffer a maximum of one year and eight months for
violating the Forestry Code of the Philippines, and related environmental laws.
Task Force Ilahas action officer, Supt. William Seņoron identified
them as Edgardo Lozada, Jonathan Castor, Rey Lozada, Leonardo Latumbo, Leonil
Latumbo, and Dennis Latumbo, who were arrested while illegally cutting and gathering
rattan, consisting of 10 bundles with a market value of P 4,908, in May this year.
The apprehending TFI officers were led by SPO3 Walter Nepomuceno,
assisted by the Silay Police, and Bantay Bukid Brigade volunteers of Brgy. Patag,
Silay City, Negros Occidental. The TFI also reported that Gabriel Sangler, Elicasio
Dohenio and Enrico Dohenio were detained for violation of the Forestry Code for
cutting, gathering, collecting, and removing timber and other forest products
without legal documents. Last month, a team composed of City
Environment Natural Resources Office in Talisay City and the TFI caught the suspects
in the act of processing charcoal and possessing 22 pieces of round timber and
439 pieces of pole size saplings of endemic tree species, consisting of Bakan,
Binunga and Taluto in Imban Gamay River, Sitio Hiyang-hiyang, Katilingban in Talisay.*
