SU eyed as shared institution
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

Dr. Ben Malayang III, president of Silliman University in Dumaguete City, said infrastructures have been put in place for the university to become a shared institution.

Malayang said that everybody in the system knows exactly what to do in responding to happenings within the campus. He said a crisis response unit headed by university pastor Rev. Noel Villalba was formed and a response intervention center was organized to address concerns and inquiries through the 2101 hotline number.

The project also allows the university to immediately connect to parents during crisis situations.

Malayang also said the university saves P200,000 a month in supposed rentals to an internet provider with the launching of the MY SILLIMAN SIM.

Certain funds are allotted to door managers in Silliman to enable them to have texting capability, Malayang said.

It will also implement policies on the wearing of helmet for those driving motorcycles, no-smoking inside the campus, and its campaign against illegal drugs, he said, adding that despite oppositions to these policies, he will ensure that students, faculty and visitors at Silliman comply with the rules.

Malayang said these changes are aimed at making the university become a community-friendly campus. SU presently has a student population of 8,000.

Meanwhile, members of a group called Exodus positioned themselves in certain areas of Silliman reiterating their claim over some of its properties.

The same group last week fenced the Divinity School housing of the university, prompting SU to field additional security personnel.*JG
