Chua's triple lifts AACI;
Basecom prevails
BY CEDELF TUPAS

AACI Trading had John Dustin Chua to thank for in its 106-104 overtime win over JSY Transport/Unitra that kept its unblemished record in the Fil-Sino AACI Inter-color Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym Wednesday night.

Chua's three-point heave from the corner rattled in at the buzzer, completing a drive-and-draw play created by Bonbon Baclay and Christopher Tan as AACI Trading bagged its third win in as many games, while dealing JSY a third defeat in four outings. Chua, who finished with 18 points, all from beyond the arc, and Arvin Gustilo actually hit back-to-back triples to pull AACI even at 104-all, before Ritchie Militante split his free throws to give JSY a slim 105-104 lead and pave the way for Chua's heroics.

Import Ronald Arabia almost blew the game twice for AACI, missing two free throws that could have been the game-winning points with 1.8 seconds left in regulation. He also missed a couple of potential go-ahead foul shots late in overtime.

Earlier, Basecom, with Daniel Chiu and Antonio Rogacion providing the points, compounded Sweet Crystal Sugar's woes with an 82-67 rout, its second win in four games.

With import Deno Soriano limited to 8 points, Chiu and Rogacion stepped up to score 8 points apiece, while Michael Ang added 12.

JSY opened a nine-point lead in the third period, behind Mars Echarri and Janjan Yang but Bon Bon Baclay, Atong Villanueva and Gustilo raised their games to make it 62-60 for AACI heading into the final period.

Echarri, who posted 18 points, also forced overtime with a lay-up. But his efforts went down the drain.

Gustilo topscored for AACI with 21 points, while Baclay and Arabia contributed 17 and 9, respectively. JSY was led by Ritchie Militante with 24 points, Patrick Echarri with 14 and Jan Jan Young with 11.

Struggling Sweet Crystal Sugar was paced by Jeff Wee with 14 points, Joel Deocadiz with 12 and Dansoy Co and Charlton Ong with 8 apiece. *CPT
