Bascon in Sandugo Hall of Fame;
Sipalay City to focus on tourism

Mayor Carminia Bascon of Himamaylan City in Negros Occidental was named as a Hall of Fame Awardee of the National Sandugo Award for Local Chief Executives, a press release from the city said.

Dr. Medardo Estanda, city health officer of Himamaylan, said the National Voluntary Blood Donation Program of the Department of Health will confer to Bascon the Hall of Fame National Sandugo Award on July 31, at the Clam Shell Restaurant in Intramuros, Manila.

After four years of being a national Sandugo Awardee, Bascon will be bestowed the award with barangay chairmen of Brgys. 1, 4, Suay and Caradio-an, who will each receive the award for the second year, Estanda added in the press release.

Another barangay captain from Brgy. II will also get for the first time the Sandugo Award this year that brings into five the total of barangay captains to be awarded. Blood-letting activities are being held monthly in the city to help gather blood to save lives when needed.

The barangay chairpersons to be awarded are Rita Ann Tamargo - Brgy. 1; Ofelia Sencil - Brgy. 4; Evangeline Gran - Brgy. Caradio-an; Felicidad Badajos - Brgy. Suay and Alfredo Gegueira - Brgy. II, the press release said.

Meanwhile, Sipalay City, last year's Hiyas ng Turismo Awardee, is intensifying its thrust on tourism and environment awareness, a Philippine Information Agency press release said.

The City Tourism and City Environment and Natural Resources Office, through the instructions of Mayor Soledad Montilla, are conducting a tourism and environment forum to the different schools in the city.

The forum which started July 9 will run for two months every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. It is designed to raise public awareness on the economic importance of tourism and sustaining it through a healthy environment.

Among the topics discussed are the situation of the city tourism, solid waste management and global warming. Two films are being shown composed of "Sipalay: Jewel of the Sugar Island" which features the city's tourism attractions and Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth," the press release said.

So far, the team from both departments has visited 13 schools (6 elementary, 5 high schools and 2 colleges) of the 38 target private and public schools in the city.

Meanwhile, former mayor and now Vice-Mayor Oscar Montilla is also an awardee in this year's National Sandugo Awards for Local Government Executives, the press release added.*

Everest team visits school

The Philippine Mount Everest Team recently visited the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos in Bacolod City through the invitation of the Recoletos Association of Mountaineers and Negros Mountaineering Club, a UNO-R press release said.

Leo Oracion, Pastor Emata, Noelle Wenceslao, Janet Belarmino and Carina Dayondon, with Art Valdez were honored in a program held at the Instructional Media Center of the university. The program started with Darwisha Bonza giving the opening remarks while Carlos Legaspi Jr. , UNO-R Director of Student Affairs, gave the closing remarks.*

Dance showdown set today

Nine dance groups will compete at 4-6 p.m. today at the north wing Event Centre of SM City Bacolod in line with the ABS-CBN M.O.R. 101.5's 6th anniversary celebration, a press release from the station said.

The M.O.R. Dance Showdown will also serve as a showcase of talents and skills in dancing of the local dance groups, Streetguys, Ultrafunk, Topmen Unlimited, Bacolod City College Dance Art, United Angels Dancers, Cavin-Netz, Stag N' Motion, Waves Crew and Free Verse Dancers.

The grand champion will receive P5,000 while P3,000 and P2,000 will be given to the second and third placers, respectively.

Meanwhile, M.O.R. has lined-up several other activities at SM City Bacolod as part of its anniversary celebration. There will be a Quiz High, a province-wide computerized quiz bee on different subjects to be participated in by private and public third year high school students, aged 14-15 years old, at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Aug. 4. This will be the first joint venture of ABS-CBN with DepEd and IMPACT IT School which will eventually become an annual activity for the schools.

An amateur band competition called Battle of the Bands will also be held at 4 - 9 p.m. on Aug. 10, followed by an Awit Unit, the much-awaited province-wide annual singing competition for policemen, at 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 17, the press release added.*
