9-ball Open
qualifiers scheduled

One of the five qualifying legs of the San Miguel Beer Philippine 9-ball Open is slated Aug. 18-19 at the Celebrity Billiards and Bar in Bacolod City, Christopher Palses, manager of the organizing Negros Billiards Stable, said Saturday.

Palses said that the top four in the qualifying leg will advance to the national finals scheduled Sept. 14-16 in a venue which will be announced later. The winner in the qualifying leg will receive P5,000, he said. In the national finals, P500,000 will be awarded to the champion, while P250,000 will be given to the losing finalist.

About P1.35 million is at stake in the national tournament. Matches for the qualifying legs will be played under a double elimination-round format, race-to-seven with alternate breaks, Palses said.

Francisco "Django" Bustamante is the defending champion. Coming in second was Leonardo Didal, followed by Dennis Orcollo, Mike Takayama, Carlo Biado, Ronnie Alcano, Yusuke Kuruda and Marlon Manalo. *CPT
