BFAD warns against sale
of illegal sweetener
BY RENE GENOVE

The Bureau of Food and Drugs in Central Visayas reiterated its warning against the use of the illegal sweetener known as "magic sugar" which, it said, causes cancer.

At a forum held in line with the Nutrition Month celebration in Oriental Negros by the Philippine Information Agency in Dumaguete City recently, the BFAD said some vendors in the city continue to use the sugar as sweetener in their drinks.

A member of a local city women's group shared how she confronted a vendor suspected to be using the illegal sweetener in a coffee she bought. Neotogen or the "magic sugar" is a cheaper and sweeter substitute than cane sugar, and has been used by some vendors selling juice drinks and such, a BFAD advisory said.

WATER DISCONNECTION
50 residents file raps
versus Bacong mayor
BY MARICAR ARANAS

Fifty residents of Barangay Sac-sac in Bacong, Oriental Negros, are poised to file a complaint against Mayor Lenin Alviola for alleged illegal disconnection of their water services, before the Provincial Prosecutor's Office.

The complainants sought the assistance of Provincial Legal Counsel Erwin Vergara. One of them, barangay kagawad Dionisio Ramirez, said they were being punished for not supporting Bacong Mayor Lenin Alviola in the last elections.

Thelma Quiqui said they have been suffering from water shortage for almost three weeks now. She said she believes the action of Alviola is not appropriate because they pay their water bills religiously, and have receipts to prove it.

GWAVE to hold presentation
BY MARICAR ARANAS

The Gender Watch Against Violence and Exploitation will hold a special presentation on the theme "Mata Na!" on Saturday, at the Women's Center, in Dumaguete City. The activity is initiated by the GWAVE in cooperation with the Department of Social Welfare and Development. Linda Gesalve of GWAVE said it is aimed not just at entertaining but also educating the people about trafficking in persons.

She added that the law on the Anti-Trafficking against Persons Act, or Republic Act 9208, was passed in 2003 but until now many still do not know about it.

Oriental Negros is number three nationwide as a source area or supplier of persons who work as domestic helpers, sex slaves, or might be involved in illegal activities like drugs.
