| A woman and her son were killed in a fire that razed their home in Barangay Puso, La Castellana, Sunday night.
The victims were identified as Cornelia Aliling, 48, and her son Ariel, 7.
Police investigation showed that around 10:30 p.m., while mother and son were sleeping inside their rooms, embers from their improvised stove caused fire, trapping the victims inside.
The fire spread easily as the house was made of light materials, La Castellana police chief Senior Insp. Raymund Maningo said.
He added that Cornelia was allegedly suffering from a nervous breakdown and her husband was away when the incident happened.
Maningo said that the distance between the Aliling house and their nearest neighbor is far, delaying help.
Barangay Puso is an upper barangay with rugged access roads, he said.
Three policemen, SPO1 Hardy Roto, PO3 Noel Gellang, and PO1 Pleb Compoza, who live in Cabacungan, an adjacent barangay, and firemen from the town proper, went to the area to help but the house was already totally destroyed when they arrived, the police chief said.
Destruction was estimated at P69,500.*NAB
