Comelec extends
voters registration
FOR BARANGAY, SK ELECTIONS

BY
CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Negrenses and Bacoleños who trooped to Commission on Elections offices yesterday wanting to register to vote in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections got what they were asking for.

The COMELEC extended the registration for the Barangay and SK elections, which had ended Sunday.

The COMELEC yesterday issued Resolution 8256 that provides that the filing of applications for registration as SK members shall be conducted on July 28 and 29 and August 4 and 5 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This was in response to a resolution passed by the National Youth Commission urging the COMELEC to conduct the registration on the barangay level.

The COMELEC will establish filing centers in the barangays for the filling of applications for registration as SK members.

Because there is a public clamor for extension of registration of new voters, many of whom failed to register for lack of time, the COMELEC also issued Resolution 8257 extending the registration of voters for the Barangay election from July 24 to 31, to include Saturdays and Sundays.

The Barangay and SK synchronized elections are scheduled on Oct. 29, 2007.

Bacolod Comelec registrar Mavil Majarucon yesterday said the applications for registration of voters for the Barangay election will be conducted at the BAYS Center.

She said applicants should bring their current ID’s, NBI or police clearances, SSS or GSIS ID’s or postal ID’s. She said barangay ID’s and certifications and cedulas will not be entertained.

Meanwhile, Majarucon said SK applicants who have no ID’s can request anybody from their neighborhood, who is a registered voter of Bacolod City, to accompany them to the COMELEC Office and execute an affidavit of undertaking. She said their witness should bring a valid ID because her office will not entertain any certificate of live birth or marriage contract.

“If an applicant for the SK election has just turned 18 years old or will be turning 18 on Oct. 29, 2007, we suggest that he or she bring a certificate of live birth or a school ID where his or her date of birth is indicated,” Majarucon said. If their certifications of live birth have some corrections, she suggested that they bring their original copy.

Majarucon said her office will put up registration filing centers in every barangay and they are coordinating with the Department of Education so they could utilize the public schools.

She said the filing centers will be manned by a receiving committee composed of two public school teachers.*CGS
