The Iloilo city government is expected to operate its P55-million new slaughterhouse in Brgy. Tacas, Jaro before the end of 2007, Mayor Jerry Treñas said in a government press release.

Treñas said they are now implementing the finishing touches in the Double A abattoir project which is being constructed on a 2.4-hectare lot.

Iloilo City, whose existing slaughterhouse in Molo District is now more than 50 years old, is providing counterpart fund as equity aside from the lot and perimeter fence.

Treñas said the city government will seek an P11 million soft loan from the Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund to complete the additional civil works, cattle line equipment and concreting of access road, the press release added.

Rep. Raul Gonzalez Jr. also pledged to provide an electric generator set worth P1.5 million for the abattoir project, he said.

The Department of Agriculture, through the National Meat Inspection Service, has allocated some P21 million for the project to cover Building A slaughterhouse worth P6 million which is already completed; a P5.5 million holding pen for animals with water system; P5.5 million waste water treatment facility; and the installation of various hog line equipment worth P4.5 million.

The waste water treatment facility consists of a series of lagoons wherein waste water is filtered and finally recycled for other uses, while the holding pen is a waiting area for animals to be slaughtered.

Treñas said he is optimistic that the completion of the abattoir project will enable Iloilo City to sell carcass or choice-cut porks and other meats in other parts of the country.*PNA
