2 Neg. Occ. solons
seek review of CARL

MANILA - Two Negros Occidental solons will file today a resolution in the House calling for a review of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform law.

Neophyte Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer (Neg. Occ., 4 th district) and Rep. Ignacio Arroyo Jr. (Neg. Occ., 5 th district) are filing the resolution that seeks to amend the agrarian reform law.

The move complements the call of President Arroyo during her State of the Nation Address for "reform" of agrarian reform. She emphasized the need to transform agrarian reform beneficiaries to agri businessmen.

Rep. Arroyo said he sees this as a way of implementing real land reform to spur countryside development and empower the farmers the way the late Presidents Diosdado Macapagal and Ramon Magsaysay envisioned it to be.

Ferrer said land reform should go beyond land distribution and should focus greatly on providing support services to enable the farmers to be productive.

Rep. Arroyo hopes the move will be supported by all the Negros solons. He also said that he expects the review and amendments of the law before CARP expires in June 2008.*GPB
