‘Membership
in NPA down’

Brig. Gen. Gregorio Fajardo, commanding officer of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, said yesterday that membership of the New People’s Army in Oriental Negros has decreased due to the intensive campaign of the government against rebel groups.

Fajardo said several NPA guerillas have surrendered to the government, citing Philippine Army records. He added that rebels have returned to civilian life and were benefited by government development projects, such as the opening of farm- to-market roads, bridges and the implementation of the food security program.

Fajardo admitted, though, that here are sightings of NPA members in some areas in the province, and the Army has monitored them to be coming from Bohol and Cebu.

He also claimed that the strong cooperation between the Army and the Philippine National Police has resulted in the apprehension of members of the NPA.*MA
