President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo yesterday warned that she will not stand idly when anyone gets in the way of the national interest and tries to block her national vision.

“From where I sit, I can tell you, a president can always be as strong as she wants to be,” she said drawing applause and a standing ovation during her state of the nation address at the opening of the 14 th Congress.

The President outlined before the joint houses of Congress her P1.7 trillion Medium Term Public Investment Program for various parts of the country in her hour-long SONA.moremoremore

Stresses need to reform land reform

“We must reform agrarian reform so it can transform beneficiaries into agribusinessmen.”

This was the call of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her State of the Nation Address yesterday, where she announced the transfer of the Department of Agrarian Reform office to Davao.

“Done right, reform will democratize success, as (former presidents) Ramon Magsaysay and Diosdado Macapagal envisioned,” the president said, citing the success of farmers who won the Gawad Saka awards.

However, Felipe Levy Gelle, Bayan Negros secretary general, said the president’s stand indicates that she is yielding to the demand of Negros landlords to stop actual distribution of land and focus instead on delivery of projects to existing beneficiaries. moremoremore

MANILA - Two Negros Occidental solons will file today a resolution in the House calling for a review of the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform law.

Neophyte Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer (Neg. Occ., 4 th district) and Rep. Ignacio Arroyo Jr. (Neg. Occ., 5 th district) are filing the resolution that seeks to amend the agrarian reform law.

The move complements the call of President Arroyo during her State of the Nation Address for "reform" of agrarian reform. She emphasized the need to transform agrarian reform beneficiaries to agri businessmen. moremoremore
