'Buying of liniment voluntary'

Bacolod City councilor Homer Bais, who is spearheading the fund-raising campaign for the World Series-bound Bacolod-Negros softball team Friday clarified that parents of students in public schools were not required to buy the anti-dengue fever liniment, part of the proceeds of which will boost the funds for the softbelles.

Bais was reacting to media reports that parents of public schools have complained about the selling of the liniment that costs P50 with P5 going to the softbelles' trip to the US. "Buying the liniment is voluntary," Bais said.

No person or group has filed a formal complaint against the sale of the item, Bais said, adding that the fund-raising campaign using the liniment ended Friday.

He added that the sale of the liniment failed to raise a substantial amount for the Ba-Neg softbelles, who are set to see action from Aug. 12-18 in Kirkland, Washington.

Ba-Neg liaison officer Ed Cruz said the fund-raising activity was endorsed by Jean Rivera, president of the Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Educational Association, to its 54-member schools. *CPT
