The Bureau of Customs Dumaguete City sub-port has surpassed its target tax collection from P55 million in the middle of 2006, to P65 million as of last month, Deputy Customs collector Datu Camad Ali said.

Ali also said the sub-port is aiming at becoming the role model of all ports in the country for consistently achieving the target tax collection. He added that they want to surpass the P75 million mark last year, to P80 million by the end of 2007, through the support of importers from Oriental Negros.

The sub-port has contributed to the achievement of Cebu port in surpassing the target collection for the first time in the first quarter of this year, Ali said.

DTI urging cellphone users
to file raps vs. telecom firms

Mobile phone users complaining against the services of telecommunications companies were urged by the Department of Trade and Industry in Oriental Negros to file cases with the National Telecommunications Commission so proper action can be taken.

With the increasing number of cellular phone users in the country, it is not surprising to hear many people complaining, Angeline Gonzalez of the DTI provincial office said. She, however, lamented that, in many cases, mobile phone users don't bother to lodge a complaint against wireless service providers, making it difficult for government agencies to take action.

Gonzalez said the DTI office in Dumaguete helps facilitate complaints with the NTC-Region 7, who regularly sends a representative to look into these cases on a regular basis.

NORECO 2 explains
successive brownouts
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The Feeder Protection Relay of the Negros Oriental Cooperative 2 has given up, resulting in a series of power interruptions Thursday night, the NORECO management said.

Ephraim Taclob, general manager of the cooperative, made the clarification because of queries from consumers inconvenienced by five successive trip-offs, at four minute-intervals Thursday night.

Taclob said maintenance teams dispatched to check on possible line faults, to no avail because the power kept tripping off. It was remedied only when the feeder protection relay of Feeder 3 was isolated and bypassed, he said. He said there is need to recalibrate the feeder protection relay as part of its desire to maintain efficient service. NORECO 2 also intends to adjust the relays to higher capacity settings giving tolerance to overloads, by technicians from Manila, he said.*JG
