AACI breaks Sweet
cagers' hearts; JSY wins

AACI Trading and JSY Transport/Unitra completed come-from-behind victories Wednesday night for their first victories in the Fil-Sino Inter-Club Basketball Tournament in Bacolod City.

Bonbon Baclay shot 12 of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter to propel AACI past Sweet Crystal Sugar, 83-79, while JSY banked on Ritchie Militante and Sukrahj Sekhon for an 84-80 victory over Basecom. Militante had 17 points and typified a tough defensive effort, along with Sekhon, who poured 12 points. Tubby Villanueva added 11 points and Garret Tabanao combined with Julius Teruel for 17 more.

Tide Rogacion came through with clutch baskets to make it, 82-79, for JSY, before Sekhon put the outcome beyond doubt, after a Deno Soriano split from the free throw line.

Soriano's 16 points went down the drain as Basecom, which looked poised to win after taking a 63-50 advantage, surrendered the lead on Villanueva's timely triples late in the final quarter.

Michael Ang contributed 10 points for Basecom, while Antonio Rogacion and Eugene Tsai added 9 each. Sweet led at the half, 48-28, before Baclay and Arvin Gustilo teamed up to drop a 34-8 bomb in the third quarter. Although Sweet's Joel Deocadiz broke the game's final deadlock at 74-all, Gustilo nailed a triple before Baclay scored on a lay-up to make it 79-76.

The last time Sweet threatened was at 80-79 with 21 seconds left, after a Deocadiz free throw. Baclay quickly responded with a lay-up and forced Deocadiz to a miscue, allowing Ronald Arabia to seal the win from the foul line.

Gustilo also had a big night with 21 points with Roger Montalbo and Christopher Tan chipping in 5 apiece. Deocadiz made 20 points and was backstopped by Ricky Chua, who had 10. *CPT
