| Dumaguete archer Jennifer Dy Chan took the fourth place in a competition
with more than 130 female contenders from all over the world, in the ongoing 44th
Outdoor World Archery Championships in Leipzig, Germany, that ended Sunday.
Chan, former South East Asian Games gold medalist and Sydney Olympian, is representing
the Philippines along with eight other members of the Philippine Archery Team
in the competition, dubbed as the mother of all tournaments for 2007, the website
archeryworldcup.org said. Chan is currently ranked 26th worldwide. Her
performance in Leipzig was an improvement over her 11th overall standing in the
Stage-One-Meteksan Archery World Cup 2007 at the Ulsan Munsu International Center
in Ulsan, Korea last April. Another Dumaguete archer, Mark Javier, has
placed 85th in the Men's Recurve Individual Event. Both Chan and Javier
have represented the country in several international competitions. Outdoor target
archery is shot on an open flat field in both Recurve and Compound divisions.
To qualify, the male archers shoot 36 arrows at 90, 70, 50 and 30 meters while
female archers also shoot 36 arrows but at distances of 70, 60, 50 and 30 meters.
In total, 144 arrows are shot. This round is shot during the first two days of
competition to select the top 64 men and top 64 women in each division and the
top 16 men's and women's team in each division. At the two long distances
(90m and 70m for men, 70m and 60m for women), each archer will shoot each end
6 arrows within 4 minutes on a 122cm face. At the short distances (50m and 30m),
each archer will shoot 3 arrows in 2 minutes on a 80cm face.*AP back
