PSA holds surgical mission

The Philippine Society of Anesthesiologists Inc. Subcommittee on Outreach Programs, in cooperation with the PSA Negros Occidental chapter, conducted a surgical mission called "Pagbulig Sang Anesthesia," recently, at the Bago City Hospital in Bago, Negros Occidental, a press release from the group said.

Indigent patients availed of free surgical procedures, screened for surgery and anesthesia, as well as cardiopulmonary clearance during the mission that was organized by the PSA regional director for Visayas, Dr. Antonia Erlinda de los Reyes, with PSA national vice president and chairperson, Dr. Theresa Alcantara, and spearheaded by Subcommittee on Outreach Programs led by Dr. Arnulfo Grageda, national president and chairperson, Outreach Programs Dr. Romulo Buzon.

Helping them were doctors from the Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society-NOC led by Dr. Luz Altarejos, Philippine Society of General Surgery-NOC headed by Dr. Hector Gay, and in collaborative efforts of Bago City Mayor Ramon Torres, Bago City Health Officer Dr. Pilar Mabasa, and Canlaon Medical Society led by Dr. Rolando Lee. The anesthesia team led by PSA-NOC president Dr. Carolyn Yu, the press release said.

Blood for operating room use were coordinated with the Public Health Office of Bacolod City through Eva Chua.

The Anesthesia Team included Drs. Romulo Buzon, Theresa Alcantara, Rosa Gandahari Carpio, Arnold Grageda, Roan Jocson, Monique Yoingco, from Manila, and from PSA Negros Occidental Chapter were Drs. Antonia Erlinda de los Reyes, Erlinda de los Reyes, Jane Lozada, Stephen Del Mar, Rose Soldevilla, Pamela Marchadesch, Ma. Theresa Arellano, Eden Mesias, Glynis Caduhada, Michelle Juanillo, Ric Deloso, Oscar De Juan, Lynn Agustin, Ceres Lucot, Honesto Magdaug III, Charlene Genezera, and Celeste Cabrera, the press release added.*

Warriors for
Peace take exams

The Warriors for Peace participants took their fifth kyu Aikido examinations yesterday at the Niall O'Brien Center in Espinos Village, Phase 2, in Bacolod City, a press release from the group said.

The group is a non-government organization seeking to help conflict- affected individuals through the practice of Aikido, or "The Art of Peace."

Its members took the first belting tests on July 14. The fifth kyu is the most junior belt awarded to new practitioners, marking their passage into the relatively young martial art promoting peace and harmony, the press release added.*

National disability
week kicks off

The Christian Foundation for Persons with Disability led the week-long celebration of the National Disability Week in Bacolod City that kicked off yesterday at the north wing Event Centre of SM City, a press release from the group said.

A cultural contest by the Provincial Council for the Welfare of Disabled was also held yesterday. Other activities lined up are the Abacus contest and Braille reading and writing by the CFPD at 2 p.m. today, at SM; and cultural show and family day by the City Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons from 1 to 4 p.m., tomorrow, the press release said.

A chair massage at the exhibit area is available daily for those who would like to try the services of the members of the CFPD who are trained in Swedish massage.

CFPD, formerly the Christian Foundation for the Deaf and Blind, provide services to persons with disabilities throughout Negros island. Its mission is to educate, train and empower persons with disability through community involvement and support, the press release added.

Present at the CFPD opening ceremony were its chairman Lyndon Caņa; executive secretary to Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Goldwyn Nifras; Councilor Homer Bais, chairman of the City Council for the Welfare of Disabled Persons; former Bacolod Councilor Ana Marie Palermo; Cataract Foundation Phils. program manager Mavis Campos; and Eugene Salvacion, president of the Association of Disabled Persons in Bacolod City.*

PSHS entrance test set

The Philippine Science High School will hold a National Competitive Examination on October 13, a Philippine Information Agency press release said.

The examination is open to graduating elementary pupils who belong to the upper 10 percent of their class as certified by the school principal, or those having special aptitude in Science and Math as supported by the report card and a letter of recommendation. An applicant must be a Filipino citizen with no pending application as immigrant in any foreign country, not more than 15 years of age by June 2008, in good health and fit to undergo a rigorous academic program, having good moral character, and have not taken the PSHS NCE previously, the press release said.

Interested pupils should accomplish an application form in duplicate copies that can be downloaded from PSHS website, www.pshs.edu.ph, with two recent 1x1 pictures, and a P100 non-refundable test fee.

Deadline for submission of application form is August 15.
