Scout Rangers clash
with NPA fighters
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

Patrolling Army's Scout Rangers clashed with about 20 New People's Army rebels on Sunday night in Hacienda Caridad, Brgy. E. Lopez, Silay City, as government troopers went on heightened alert for tactical offensives of insurgents in Negros.

Lt. Col. Felicisimo Budiongan, Task Force North commander, yesterday said troopers of the 3rd Scout Rangers Company chanced upon a group of rebels led by Narciso Vasquez, alias Ka Naldo, who were allegedly engaged in extortion activities. The firefight lasted for almost 10 minutes and the rebels withdrew towards Hacienda Macamaig 3 in the barangay, leaving behind three bags containing subversive documents and personal belongings.

Budiongan said traces of bloodstains were also discovered along the rebels withdrawal route, which indicated that some of them may have been injured. Vasquez is a resident of Hacienda Macamig 1 in the barangay, military said.

The military and police went on alert on reports of plans of the rebels to attack the Sipalay City Police Station in southern Negros. However, the alleged plan of rebels could also be a ploy to hit other targets elsewhere, according to Army Lt. Col. Norman Flores said.*GPB
