Negros athletic aces
brace for Asian meet

Four of Negros Occidental's athletic standouts in the Philippine Team are bracing for the Asian Athletics Championships scheduled late this month in Irbid, Jordan.

Philippine record holders Sheena Atilano of La Carlota City and Arniel Ferrera of Cauayan will be at the forefront of the Philippine bid in the July 25-29 competition. Joining them are long jump specialist Joebert Delicano of Victorias City and female hammer thrower Loralie Amahit of Binalbagan.

Ferrera said he is looking at the meet as a gauge of his progress in training for the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Ratchasima, Thailand, where he will defend his hammer throw crown.

Barangay I/ESD AMOR and ON-BACIBA ruled their divisions in the first Tinaglimahan Bowling Championship Sunday night at the New Top's Millennium Plaza in Bacolod City.

The twice-to-beat Brgy.1 squad overpowered Sharp Team in the deciding match, 568-540, to claim the top prize in the men's category, after losing the first game. Wearing the uniform of the champion squad were Allan Baer, Roger Flores, Steve Ramos, Edgar Allan del Rosario, Cesar Sumaylo and Dan Dadivas, while Zards Odango, Rey Balaan, Mandoy Hervias, Fred Mapano and Fred Empio played for Sharp.

Silverado ASSFBI Bowling Team composed of Norman Pineda, Pete Aplaon, Nene Borlado, Nonoy Gatila and Irwin Mazarte settled for second runner-up honors.

Negros Billiards Stable ace Ricky Zerna of Dumaguete City came-from-behind to nip John Rebong, 11-9, to rule the 2007 Puyat Sports 9-Ball Tournament late Sunday at the Bowling Inn in Manila.

Maximizing the winner's break format, Zerna completed the dramatic win by clustering nine straight racks in the finals of the 32-man event. Zerna beat veteran campaigner Jojo Santos (9-3) in the winner's brackets before losing to 2006 Sydney World Junior quarter-finalist Renemar "Revo" David (9-2) in the second round that put him in the loser's side.

But the Dumaguete native disposed national women's team member Iris Ranola (9-3), Roberto Dy (9-7) and Napoleon Labrador (9-4) to earn the right to face in the finals.
