Alert up for rebel attacks

The police and military went on heightened alert in southern Negros on reports of plans of the New People's Army to attack the police station in Sipalay City, Negros Occidental.

Lt. Col. Norman Flores, 61st Infantry Battalion commander, yesterday said the alleged plan could also be a ploy of the rebels planning to hit other targets elsewhere in southern Negros.

Senior Supt. Rosendo Franco, provincial police director, said he has also alerted the San Jose police outpost in Sipalay City, to foil any terroristic activities of the insurgents.

Police records show that the San Jose police outpost had also been attacked by about 30 rebels led by Reniel Cellon, alias Kumpol, in November last year. However, the attack was foiled by three policemen who stood their ground for almost two hours, police records showed.

Flores said he has redeployed some of his troops to pre-empt plans of rebels to hit any government installations in southern Negros.

The 61st IB headquarters is now being relocated to a 5-hectare lot donated by Gloria Degoma in Sitio Cogon, Brgy. Gatuslao, Candoni.

"This could ignite economic progress in the area, aside from locating my troops right at the guerilla base of the Larangan Gerilya 4 or Southwestern Front of the Komiteng Rehiyonal- Negros," Flores said.*GPB
