La Salle-IS girls
bag volley title

They danced, clowned and laughed around during breaks in between sets and timeouts.

But when the going got tough, the University of St. La Salle-Integrated School volleybelles was bad news to the opposition.

The La Sallians subdued Doņa Hortensia Salas Benedicto National High School of La Carlota City twice in an epic series over the weekend to wrest the provincial crown of the Shakey's Invitational Girls' Volleyball League in Bacolod City. Stung by a heart-rending five-set defeat yesterday morning, the girls of coach Malot Lozada returned to court with great resolve and hammered out a title-clinching 25-17, 16-25, 25-19, 25-18 victory in a do-or-die duel that lasted 65 minutes at the USLS College Covered Court.

The Fiba-Asia Men's Championship in Tokushima, Japan is two weeks away but the Philippine Team seems ready for the joust that it hopes to hurdle to pave the way for the country's return to basketball in the Olympics.

Looking sharp, the Philippine team signaled its readiness for the Olympic qualifiers by repeating over Lebanon, 87-81, last night in the finals of the Manila Four-Nation Invitationals at the Araneta Coliseum. The Nationals finished strong, thanks to Mark Caguioa and Kerby Raymundo, and coach Chot Reyes said he is satisfied with the result and the form of his team.

"From March to today, the difference is like night and day for the team. But we're evolving very well," said Reyes. "We learned how to close games, we seized the opportunity. We're able to achieve that even though we're not a hundred percent because of injuries," Reyes said.

Jarry Pelayo of Negros Billiard Stable racked up two victories, including one against World Women's runner-up Rubilen Amit, at the start of the Puyat Sports 9-ball tournament at the Bowling Inn in Manila Saturday.

Pelayo, a firecracker victim, stunned the Southeast Asian Games double gold medalist Amit, 9-7, to set the pace in the tournament, which is using the winner's break format. Pelayo had a rough start, falling behind, 1-4, before clustering three straight racks, after an error by Amit on the 8-ball in the eighth frame.

Pelayo also subdued Napoleon Labrador and will face Michael Feliciano of Bugsy in the next round.
