RP cagers fall to China "B" team
The Philippines went scoreless in the final two minutes to allowe China to escape with a 77-74 decision last night for the Chinese' second win in the 4-Nation Manila Invitational Basketball Tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.
RP playmaker Jimmy Alapag missed two potential game-tying free throws with eight seconds left, paving the way for the tall and quick Chinese squad to complete the come-from-behind victory that followed up its 88-84 win over Syria Thursday night. Despite the loss, RP coach Chot Reyes remained upbeat.
"I'm very happy
with the result. It's just a matter of us being not ready to win yet. It should
have been our first time to win against China and we were not mentally prepared,"
Reyes said. 
| Yap shut out In PBA awards With Purefoods failing to make giant strides this year, Negrense James Yap also lost his PBA Most Valuable Player citations. The 6-foot-3 guard from Escalante City, whose impressive sophomore season in 2005-2006 ended with an MVP award, made the shortlist this year but was not included in the Top 3 that had eventual winner Willie Miller of Alaska, Gary David of Air21 and Mac Cardona of Talk N' Text. Yap, whose team finished with a 6-12 record in the recent Fiesta
Cup, was also nominated for the sportsmanship award during the Leo Awards Night
at the Araneta Coliseum last night and finished third in the voting. |
| Championship weekend starts Doņa Hortensia Salas Benedicto National High School, the only unbeaten team in the Negros eliminations of the Shakey's Girls Invitational Volleyball League, guns for an outright championship berth today when it goes up against University of St. La Salle-Integrated School. The La Carlota-based DHSBNHS spikers go into the 8 a.m. match with the psychological edge, owing to their 19-25, 25-20, 25-21 win over the La Sallians during their elimination-round match June 30. up three more victories to finish with an immaculate 5-0 slate at the end of the
