| The police is looking into the possibility that a group of minors
considered suspects in a series of robberies in Talisay City, may also be involved
in the rape-slay of a 16-year-old college student in the place. Chief
Inspector Joseph Thomas Martir, Talisay police chief, yesterday said they are
trying to convince the parents of a 13-year-old to allow them to question him,
which may help them solve the rape-slay of Mary Joy Mayo. Martir said
the 13-year-old was identified by a witness who was in the company of the minors
who allegedly robbed three residences at Menlo Subdivision in Talisay, one of
whom even shot a house owner they had robbed, a day before Mayo was raped and
brutally killed. He said the two deformed slugs of the 9mm pistol recovered from
two of the three houses fired at by one of the minors, and the slug of a 9mm gun
also recovered from the crime scene, will be subjected to ballistic tests at the
Crime Laboratory. Martir said the group of minors who eluded the police,
scampered and hid in the sugarcane field in Hacienda Cabanbanan, Brgy. Zone 12-A,
Talisay City, where the body of Mayo was recovered. If the slugs came from the
same gun, we expect a solution to the rape-slay of Mayo, he added. Martir
said the parents of the minor refused to cooperate, and even threatened Talisay
policemen with legal action. The Talisay police is expected to file robbery
with attempted homicide against the 13-year-old and his companions, for allegedly
shooting the owner of the house they had robbed. Jose "Jigger" Besorio, stepfather
of Mayo, was among the 15 persons who tested negative for gunpowder nitrates.
Initial findings of the medico-legal officer of Talisay showed that Mayo was molested,
had two gunshot wounds on her breast and right leg, and seven incise wounds in
the forehead. Her body was discovered half-naked, without her pants and
underwear, in a sugarcane plantation of the place Martir said he is optimistic
in the rape-slay will be solved, if the 13-year-old cooperates with them. .*GPB
